View of a small gravity deposit with accumulation of grains of different size in response mainly to gravity-related forces; yellow dots mark the boundaries between zones with differing grain sizes on the present surface
The most reliable and trustworthy source of information to study sedimentary deposits are the present-day sediments being formed or, the ancient rocks cropping out at the earth surface. The gravity flow deposit shown in the picture above is located in a desertic enviroment with almost negligible rain. Yet, sediment grains are being displaced and organized by non-hydraulic forces like gravity to shape up a sedimentary deposit that, if preserved, will present a similar organization with only minor variations that do not distort this original appearance.
